At the Moog School - Columbia we teach deaf children to talk. We are located in Columbia, Missouri and are a satellite program of the Moog Center for Deaf Education in St. Louis, Missouri. In our program we work with children from birth to kindergarten. From birth to 3 years our focus is on the family, teaching parents how to help their child learn to talk and listen. We have a toddler class for children at age two and a full day preschool program for children 3 to kindergarten. We are the only program in Central Missouri where deaf children learn to talk. |

Environs The Moog School Columbia is located in the college town of Columbia in Central Missouri. Central Missouri is a rural area with large city amenities. The University of Missouri is just across town and the state capitol in Jefferson City, 25 miles away. Since we are in Missouri, the "show-me" state, we believe that to understand what the Moog School Columbia has to offer, you need to see it. We hope you will plan a visit and let us show you how we teach deaf children to talk and how our school can benefit your child.
The mission of Moog School Columbia is to teach children who are deaf and hard of hearing to talk and to help them learn the pre-academic skills necessary to be successful in their neighborhood schools. The Moog School provides a supportive and stimulating learning environment for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and their families.
Educational Philosophy The Moog School Columbia adheres to an auditory/oral philosophy in the education of children with hearing loss. We believe that most deaf children, regardless
of the severity of hearing loss, can learn to speak and to understand the speech of others. In addition to helping children learn to
speak, we are also committed to helping our children grow socially and emotionally. Learning to talk makes it possible to communicate independently with
people who do not understand or use sign language, providing greater independence to participate in the world.
History Our school was founded in 2001 as a satellite program of the Moog Center for Deaf Education in St. Louis so that families living in Central Missouri would not have to travel to St. Louis for services. We currently serve families from a 90-mile radius of Columbia and we are the only program in Central Missouri where children who are deaf and hard of hearing can learn to talk.
Our staff includes 2 full-time teachers and 3 licensed speech-language pathologists. In addition, we employ speech pathology students from the University of Missouri as teacher aides. We have a teacher-pupil ratio of better than 1 to 3. Our teaching staff has the know-how, dedication, and experience to make a significant difference for your child. Our staff is experienced in working with children with cochlear implants as well a hearing aids and FM systems.
Our educational programs include our parent-infant program for families with children up to two years and our toddler/preschool program for children 2 to 5 years. Our goal is for our children to learn to talk, and to talk well enough for talking to be their means of communicating. We anticipate that most of our children will mainstream into schools with their hearing age mates by five or six years of age. We provide support to our children when they enter mainstream programs through in-service for the school staff and through individual tutoring of children in spoken language if needed. We have a nine--month school year, from September through May.
Parent-Infant ProgramOur Parent-Infant Program is for families with children from birth to three years. We provide:
Our Preschool program is for children 3 to kindergarten. Our goal is for our children to learn to talk, and to talk well enough for talking to be their means of communicating.
The full-time pre-school has highly focused activities to accelerate children in learning listening skills, speech, vocabulary and development of connected language.
The children also engage in typical preschool activities.
In the Mainstream program, we provide support to our children when they enter Mainstream programs through in-service for the school staff and through individual academic tutoring and speech therapy/auditory training.
Summer Session We have a Summer session for children in our School Program, typically in June, which includes 5 half-day classes for four weeks, with opportunities for tutoring and private speech services.
Fundraising Every year The Moog School Columbia benefits from generosity of an ever-growing number of people and organizations. While their reasons for giving are as varied as their interests and their financial circumstances, they all share a common desire - to provide an educational environment where children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to talk. If you share in our passion of teaching children who are deaf and hard of hearing to talk, you may be interested in the gift options available to you. Many community members give private donations for Tributes and Memorials which are all tax-deductible. The students' parents and teachers also plan yearly fundraisers for the school.
Since our opening in 2001, 12 students have graduated from our school and mainstreamed into their neighborhood schools with minimal support.
The primary criterion for admission into our program is that our program can benefit the child. Typically that means that the child has a significant enough hearing loss and language delay to need the kind of special education program we offer as well as having the potential for learning to talk.
Admission Procedures The first step is to contact Judy Harper, Director of the program. She will talk with you about your child and will explain what our program has to offer. Typically, we will set up a visit so you can see our program and schedule an appointment for an evaluation of your child to determine if our program is an appropriate one. Parents may contact Judy by calling (573) 446-1981 or by e-mail jharper@moogschool.org.
Tuition for the full-day preschool program for the 2007-08 school year is $17,460. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education approved
our school program, which means that we may contract with local school districts for services. We are also providers for Medicaid, the Bureau of Special Health
Care Needs and Boone County Family Resources. We will assist parents in approaching their school districts for funding.
Parents with children under age three are eligible for Missouri First Steps, a state program that provides financial support for children from birth to age three.
Financial aid is available based on need. Please ask for a Financial Aid Application in the School Office. We also assist families in finding other resources for financial help.
