Hearing Oral Program of Excellence (HOPE)

Located within the Washington State University / Eastern Washington University Speech and Hearing Clinic is the area's only auditory-oral preschool for children with hearing loss. The non-profit program offers a comprehensive, state-of-the-art preschool for families who want their hearing impaired children to learn to listen and talk.

Children will benefit from a language enriched environment that will maximize their communication and academic potential. Families will benefit from a supportive atmosphere with a rich wealth of resources. Children with normal hearing can also benefit from this "language enriched" program.

The preschool is housed in a spacious 1,000 square foot classroom, complete with kitchen and enclosed playground. In addition, treatment rooms are available for individual speech and audiology sessions.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to optimize the acquisition of listening, learning and speaking skills in children who have hearing loss and provide a supportive environment for their families.

Educational Philosophy

Spokane HOPE School is the vision of professionals and families of children with hearing loss. At the heart of this vision is the belief that children with hearing loss should have the opportunity to maximize their auditory-oral communication skills and be independent participants in mainstream society.

Our Staff

Students receive instruction from a certified teacher of deaf and hard of hearing children. Students may also receive speech-language therapy and/or audiology services from graduate students, supervised by state licensed and nationally certified speech pathologists and/or audiologists.

A parent-infant program is available.

Toddler Program

Toddlers (and their parents) meet one morning per week.

Preschool Program

Preschoolers attend either three mornings or four afternoons per week.

Academic Program

Small group language intensive instruction is designed to prepare children for a successful transition to their neighborhood school.

Clinical Services

Audiological

The University Speech and Hearing Clinic which provides speech, language and hearing services is a cooperative program between Washington State University Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences and Eastern Washington University Department of Communication Disorders. It is housed on the Riverpoint Campus in the Health Sciences Building.

Audiological services provided on-site include cochlear impant and hearing aid checks, minor repairs, and replacement parts.

Cochlear Implant

Complete cochlear implant services (medical and mapping) are available through Spokane Ear Nose and Throat Clinic which is located just a few minutes from the school.

Speech and Language

Individual speech and language services are available.

Assessment

Comprehensive individual assessments are completed on an annual basis in conjunction with ongoing classroom evaluations.

Parent Support Groups

Bi-monthly parents support groups are held on-site.

Professional Outreach

Consultation with day care centers, pre-schools, school districts and private schools is available.

Graduate Training

Practicum experiences in the preschool are available to graduate students in speech/language pathology and audiology through Washington State University / Eastern Washington University.

Admission Procedures

Tuition

Tuition is on a sliding scale, based on ability to pay. No child will be turned away due to inability to pay. Parents interested may contact the HOPE School
